This past week, a fieldtrip for a group of Baton Rouge, Louisiana high school students to a “college fair” turned into a traumatic presentation on “Godly” living.
The students’ families had signed permission slips for them to go to the activity, which was to include food, games, special speakers, and a college fair. Instead, they arrived at a sexist and openly homophobic church. Students were separated into girls and boys for different presentations – girls got a discussion on rape, forgiving rapists, and submission to the men in their lives, boys got push up contests and other contests where money was given away. Trans and nonbinary students were taunted and had water poured on them. Students and chaperones reported that the discussions in the girls’ group were so graphic that a number of students escaped to the bathrooms in tears.
This sort of bait-and-switch is coercive. This entire field trip violates student’s and families rights, and we’ll try to bring you follow up on what consequences, if any, the school faces.
